Getting My Shit Together in 2019

Getting My Shit Together in 2019

Blog
Don’t start a social media campaign about being impeccable with your word, unless you really mean it. Since my wife and I have been together, we try to participate in some kind of burning bowl ceremony at the end of the year. It’s a symbolic activity to release beliefs that no longer serve us, and claim new beliefs for the new year. New year, new us. Obviously, I don’t become a new person in a day. But having a routine of reflecting on my year while traveling away from home, allows me to identify some clear themes to work on for the following year. And having that clarity allows me to learn from my mistakes, instead of continuing to make the same mistakes I made last year. In 2018, I…

Who Run the World? Teens!

Who Run the World? Teens!

Blog
I never intended to become a teen mentor. I was studying the law of attraction because I was failing at my goal to work in scripted TV. I wanted to stop failing. I didn’t want to volunteer with a group of surly teenagers. But Michele Roberts talked me into it. She told me that I would make a great mentor and the teens already liked me. At that point, I hadn’t paid any attention the teens. I saw the adults of my spiritual center fawn all over them, especially the teens that were the offspring of a leader in the spiritual community. Nora and Will, the senior minister’s children received the most attention. They didn’t need my attention too. They had enough love and support in their lives. So I…

Thankful for Myself

Thankful for Myself

Blog
Every Thanksgiving, I used to reflect on gratitude for the people and experiences in my life. My wife’s cute face, my happy marriage, dream job, great friends and amazing family. This year, I’m including myself in the list of people I’m grateful for. This year, I spoke kindly to myself more often. When facing failure, I frequently choose to forgive myself. When it’s 11pm and I promised the cousin who is managing my social media that I’d write a blog, I’m proud of myself for pushing through the fatigue. But I’m also proud of every time I chose sleep over responsibility. Feeling bombarded with stories about ordinary Americans perpetrating mass shootings, I’m grateful for all I do to teach love as the antidote for violence. I may not be as…

What’s Love Got to Do With It?

What’s Love Got to Do With It?

Blog
It’s been eight days since we received the election results, and it feels like half of the country is going through at least one of the five stages of grief. Tensions on social media are high. Protests are erupting across the country. Late night comedians are struggling to find the humor in current events. Families are fractured. So when someone speaks up for peace, love, and unity, it’s only logical to ask, what’s love got to do with it? What’s love got do with sexism, racism, religious intolerance and homophobia? What’s love got to do with people who are actively fighting against my freedom or the freedom of others? As a half-black, half-Jewish lesbian, I can honestly say from personal experience that love has everything to do with it. My…

#LoveWins

Blog
It’s easy to use the #LoveWins hashtag when legislation passes that makes us happy. On a day when so many people are filled with hurt, confusion, and fear of the unknown, it can be more challenging to believe that love always prevails. Love doesn't mean that people vote the way I want them to. Love means that we are all committed to working together to create a more equal, prosperous and joy-filled country. This morning, Donald Trump spoke of unity. FOX News spoke of unity. Each of us have the power to choose to let go of the events that lead up to this moment, and choose unity instead. In This Thing Called You, Ernest Holmes wrote, “You cannot draw love into your consciousness through hate. You cannot draw peace…

Faith: The Ultimate Trump Card

Blog, Success
What do you get when you mix hard work and determination with a well developed and well-researched plan? Logically, it seems that these elements are the building blocks of success. But if someone working to achieve success does not have a lot of faith in themselves or in their outcome, they are often left spinning their wheels. How many times have we seen people with faith in themselves, achieve amazing success? Rocky was Sylvester Stallone’s first screenplay. Stallone’s purpose of writing it was to create an opportunity for himself to star in a feature film. Rocky’s success served as the launching pad for Stallone’s successful career as an actor. However, when one thinks of an incredibly talented actor or writer, Sylvester Stallone is unlikely to come to mind. Regardless of…
